Tried a buddy's gear wrench set last Tuesday on a seized 14mm caliper bracket bolt and it took me 10 minutes versus the 45 I wasted fighting with a regular wrench, so has anyone else found situations where the flex head makes a difference or just me?

Tbh, I used to just snug up oil drain plugs by feel until a retired diesel guy watched me do one and said 'you're gonna strip that pan by next spring.' Has anyone else had a cheap timing light throw off their marks like that?

Last Saturday I had a 2010 F-150 come in that would crank but not fire. I threw a scanner on it and got nothing useful, no codes, no communication errors. It took me four and a half hours to find a simple electrical problem. Has anyone else had a ground wire drive them crazy like that?

He was in a hurry and didn't bother disconnecting the battery first... smoke came out from under the dash in about 2 seconds. Has anyone else seen those old 'cheat' methods go way wrong like that?

I needed digital calipers for a valve adjustment on my 05 Civic. The Snap-on truck wanted $220 for theirs. I went with the $40 Pittsburg set from Harbor Freight instead. Its been 8 months and they still read within 0.001 of my buddies Mitutoyo. Not saying theyll last 20 years but for occasional use they do the job. Has anyone else had good luck with cheap calipers on engine work?

Three years torquing lugnuts wrong until a wheel came off on the highway

I was doing oil changes and tire rotations at a shop in Austin for about 3 years. Always used the impact gun to zing lugnuts on, then called it good. Last month a customer came back with a wheel wobbling after a rotation I did. The studs were stretched and two of them snapped right off when I tried to re-torque. An old diesel mechanic walked over and showed me the torque spec was 100 ft-lbs, not whatever my gun was slamming them to. He made me use a torque stick and then a click wrench on every lug. I had no idea I was over-torquing by probably 40 ft-lbs that whole time. Anyone else learn the hard way that impacts and torque specs don't mix?

So now I tell every customer with a wet belt to fix the leak first or expect it back in 6 months. Anyone else notice this pattern or am I just working on the greasiest cars in town?

I did my buddy's 2012 Ford Focus timing chain at 152,000 miles last month. He wanted me to just swap the tensioner and save $300 on the full kit. I told him no way, the chain had stretched a quarter inch already. But then my other mechanic friend says he's done just tensioners on three Escapes past 180k and they ran fine. I'm in the middle here because on one hand the full job takes forever but on the other hand you don't want it skipping teeth. Learned that those stupid alignment dowels can bend if you force them, and then nothing seats right. Ended up having to pull the whole thing back out and file down the burrs. Anyone else ever fight with a transmission swap that should have been simple?
