Guy at the parts counter in Gary told me to skip the torque wrench and just feel it, and I can't get it out of my head
Stopped in for brake pads last Friday and the counter guy, older fella, watched me pull out my torque wrench and said the young guys overthink it and a good hand knows when it's tight. I laughed it off, went home, and then did the job with the wrench anyway, but then I started thinking about how many rear brake jobs I've seen with warped rotors because somebody just cranked on a ratchet until their arm got tired. Tbh there's a real split between the old feel-it crowd and the spec-everything crowd, and I've been in both camps depending on the car. What got me was a 2019 pickup I did in January where I pulled 140 ft-lbs on the lugs after the last guy had them so loose the wheel was shifting around. So I'm not saying torque specs are gospel for every single bolt, but for anything that spins at speed or holds a wheel on, I'm going by the book. Ngl though, part of me wonders if the old timers did fewer comebacks because they were paying attention to the feel, not just the click. Any of you got a rule for when you trust your arm over the wrench?
