My uncle swore by WD-40 for cleaning old VCR heads but it just left sticky gunk on the pinch roller that took me an hour to scrub off with IPA

He said he'd been doing it since the 80s and it worked fine, but after I ruined one of my belts I checked a vintage repair forum and turns out you're only supposed to use it on the outer casing, not the actual playback parts - anyone else get bad advice from a well-meaning relative that wrecked a retro gadget?

Oh man, IPA is actually isopropyl alcohol which works way better for tape parts anyway!

My grandpa once told me to clean a SNES cartridge with lemon juice, and now I can't play Super Mario World without smelling citrus.
