Serious question, why do today's marine mechanics need a degree in computer science just to change a spark plug?

I learned on engines that you could fix with basic tools and common sense.

My buddy replaced a fuel pump and still needed a dealership computer reset.

Wait, is that really a thing now? That sounds like such a hassle just to fix a simple part. Sometimes I wonder if dealerships make stuff up to get you in the door. Seems wild that a fuel pump needs a special computer reset. Could be one of those things people online make a bigger deal about than it really is. Maybe your buddy just got unlucky with his car model, a normal mechanic should be able to handle most of that stuff.
