Showerthought: I was paying $120 a month for a fancy co-working space in Chiang Mai for a year before I realized the best work spot was the quiet library down the street.

A local friend finally asked me why I was always in that loud, expensive place when the library had faster internet for free. Anyone else have a 'duh' moment about their work setup costs?

Hold up, libraries are free for everyone. I mean, that's the whole point of them. Maybe it's different where you are, but here, you don't need to be a local or have a special card to just go in and sit down and use the wifi. The card is just for checking out books. I feel like a lot of people don't use libraries because they think there's some rule about it, but you can totally just walk in. It's a public space.

But doesn't that just show how we all assume there's some hidden rule or cost for things? @hugo_cooper might have thought that cafe was exclusive too, same deal. So many people I talk to avoid libraries, parks, even free events because they figure there's a catch. It's like we're trained to expect a barrier to entry everywhere. You see it with community centers too - most of them let you just walk in and hang out. The truth is, most public stuff is way more open than we give it credit for.
