Hot take: That guy who told me "skip Vietnam and head straight to Chiang Mai" gave me bad advice that cost me two months of my trip

I followed his tip from the Da Nang hostel last January and ended up in a cramped digital nomad bubble with overpriced cafes and zero adventure, while my buddy who ignored him is still raving about the cheap beach life in Hoi An - has anyone else regretted skipping a place just because some random influencer type said it's overhyped?

Skip Vietnam and head straight to Chiang Mai" - man, that line is exactly why I don't trust random hostel advice anymore. I actually did the opposite, spent a month in Hoi An and loved every cheap bowl of cao lau. Your buddy got it right, the beach life there is way more real and affordable than what you get in Chiang Mai's overpriced nomad scene. I think people who say "skip Vietnam" usually spent like three days in Saigon and never left the backpacker strip. Your mileage may vary, but I'd take Hoi An's lantern-lit streets over a cramped digital nomad cafe any day.

Hoi An for me too, five dollars for a tailor-made jacket beats any coworking space.
