Update: That week I had three jobs fall through in a row

It was a rough stretch about a month ago, where Monday, Wednesday, and Friday all had signed clients cancel on me right before I was set to start. One guy in Springfield said his loan fell through, another just ghosted after I bought the materials, and the third decided to 'go with a friend.' What made it stand out was the money I lost on gas and planning time, maybe $400 total, and the hit to my schedule. I was scrambling to fill the holes and it threw my whole month off. Has anyone else had a run of bad luck like that and how do you bounce back?

That "hit to my schedule" is the worst part... it's like one domino knocks over your whole plan. I had a week where two big home projects got pushed back and it left me just sitting around. You really have to build in some buffer time for that stuff.

My local hardware store always has a line out the door on Saturday mornings. It shows how many people's weekend plans depend on that one trip for supplies. A delay there pushes back painting, which means the furniture can't be moved in, and suddenly your whole Sunday is just waiting. That domino effect makes a simple two hour task ruin two days. I've started keeping a basic stock of tape and spackle just to avoid that first fallen piece.

Springfield's an hour drive each way, right? That's a lot of gas. But three jobs in one week feels like more than bad luck. Maybe your planning needs a deposit system. I lost a day's work once when someone canceled, so now I take half up front for materials. It stops the worst of the bleeding. You can't control their loan or their friend, but you can control your own rules.
