Switched from hourly to flat rate bids and my Tuesday nights got way better
For about 3 years I bid every job by the hour and I thought that was just how it worked. Then last spring I lost a bathroom remodel in Naperville to a guy who quoted a flat number and the homeowner told me straight up that she picked him because she knew the total before he picked up a hammer. That stung enough that I tried flat rate bids on my next 4 jobs. The first one was scary, I ate about 6 extra hours on a kitchen tile job because I guessed wrong on how bad the old backer board was. But by job 3 I was padding my labor estimate by 15 percent and nobody blinked at the price. What really sold me was that I stopped having awkward phone calls every Friday about hours and receipts, and homeowners stopped treating me like a meter that was running. My change orders got cleaner too, because when something extra comes up I just quote another flat number instead of arguing about hours. I have not gone back to hourly once since August. Any of you bid flat on service calls or is that still too risky for small stuff?
