Met a GC at a diner who taught me more in 10 minutes than 2 years on the job

I was eating breakfast at a place in Nashville last month and this old contractor just started talking to me about how he frames basements. He told me to always check the sill plate for rot BEFORE the customer signs, and that one tip has saved me from two nightmare jobs already. Any of you ever learned something game-changing from a random chat like that?

Drives a '78 F-150, I bet. Ran into a retired roofer at a Home Depot once, told me to never trust a nail gun on valley flashing. Hand nail it or watch it fail. Never forgot it.

@the_felix, did he give you a good reason why nail guns are worse than hand nailing for that part?
