Last Tuesday I had a client meeting that went from zero to hero in 20 minutes
I was showing a kitchen remodel bid to a couple who seemed totally checked out, barely looking at the plans. Then the husband pointed at the sink placement and asked a super specific question about plumbing access behind the wall. Turns out he's a retired plumber from Phoenix, and once we started talking shop about vent stacks and local code, the whole vibe changed. We spent the next hour redrawing the layout together on a napkin, and they signed the contract before I left. Anyone else have a client who suddenly 'got it' after you found their hidden expertise?

Always thought that was just jargon.

That retired plumber knew his vent stacks.

Yeah but colej74, that's actually a common mix-up. Vent stacks are for the drain system, not the plumbing vents in your walls. The old guy was right about the need for proper venting, but the term is wrong. A vent stack goes through the roof to let sewer gases out. What he's talking about are just the vent pipes inside the walls that keep drains flowing. It's a small detail, but it matters when you're trying to explain it to someone or look up a code.
