Had a customer insist I lay tile over their old linoleum today
I told them it'd crack in a month and they said they'd risk it, so I had them sign a waiver. Anyone else run into homeowners who just won't listen to basic advice?

Gotta say you might have this backwards. Everyone's talking about the tile cracking but what about the prep work that linoleum is hiding? If there's any moisture or rot underneath that old floor you just sealed it all in with tile and grout. That linoleum could trap water against the subfloor and turn it to mush in a year or two. Had a job last summer where the previous guys did exactly this and the whole floor started growing mold underneath. Waiver or not your name's still gonna be all over that mess when they call you back.

See exactly where you're coming from with this. Did a bathroom remodel two years ago where the homeowner insisted on tiling over old sheet vinyl cause it was "clean enough." Six months later we're ripping it all out because moisture got trapped between the old linoleum and the subfloor, turned the whole thing into a swamp. The tile looked great for about a month then started popping up like popcorn. Now my name's attached to that job forever and every time someone mentions tile in that house they remember me. People don't get that sealing in a problem doesn't fix it, it just hides it for later.
