Appreciation post: my client's kitchen demo turned into a surprise plumbing job
I was tearing out a backsplash in a 1920s bungalow and my hammer went right through the wall into a live water line I didn't know was there. I had to shut off the main, run to the supply house for a coupling, and fix it before the drywall guys showed up. What's the most unexpected thing you've found hidden in a wall?

Found a rat's nest of old newspapers from the 40s once, insulation was just shredded newsprint.

That's wild, @nina_sullivan61. Makes you wonder what else is hidden in those walls. Found some old cigarette packs and a bottle from the 20s in my place. That shredded newsprint must have been a fire waiting to happen. Kind of a cool time capsule though, before fiberglass took over.

Reminds me how we're all just building on top of other people's quick fixes and forgotten choices. You find a pipe where it shouldn't be, or insulation made of literal garbage, and it's proof that someone else was here before, in a hurry, just trying to get the job done. We're all leaving these little time bombs and treasures for the next person without even knowing it. Makes me look at my own half-finished projects differently, like I'm not just fixing my house but adding to this weird, hidden history. The real blueprint of a building is just layers of people making it up as they go along.
