A plumber told me my pipe thread tape was too thin and it changed my whole process

I was finishing a rough-in for a bathroom sink in a new build, and a plumber I respect saw my work. He said, 'You're only using two wraps of tape? That's asking for a leak in six months.' I always thought two was fine, but he showed me his method of four tight wraps. I switched to doing four wraps on every threaded joint about a year ago. I haven't had a single callback for a weepy connection since. What's your go-to number of wraps for standard half-inch fittings?

Three wraps and pipe dope, every time.

Yeah, the "every time" part is what gets me. What about when you're dealing with old, corroded threads? I've seen that third wrap just shred on the bad metal and cause more problems.

Saw a plumber on YouTube say you gotta wire brush the threads first or the dope doesn't grab.
