Warning: cheap butcher block oil cost me a lot more in the long run

I spent $12 on some store brand mineral oil at a big box store about 4 months ago... figured oil was oil, right? Well, that stuff went rancid in my walnut butcher block after just 8 weeks. The smell was awful and I had to sand down the entire surface to get rid of it. Lost about $40 worth of sandpaper and 6 hours of my weekend fixing it. Has anyone else had a similar problem with certain oils going bad on them?

8 weeks?? That's wild, I've never heard of mineral oil going bad like that.

8 weeks though, @spencer664, did you leave the cap off or store it somewhere hot? Curious if your bottle was one of those clear plastic ones that let light in, cause that can mess with it way faster than people think.

Spencer tried dirt cheap oil, got dirt cheap results.
