Unpopular opinion: I used to think buying the biggest bag of rice was always the cheapest move.

Then I saw a receipt from my neighbor, who buys the 2-pound bags on sale for $1.50 each... and realized my 20-pound sack goes stale before I use half of it. Anyone else have a 'bulk buy' fail?

Honestly, my bulk buy fail is a giant jar of coconut oil. It looked like such a smart buy. Now it just sits there, a weird, semi-solid monument to my poor planning. I use a teaspoon a month for cooking, so at this rate, my grandkids will inherit it. It's basically a kitchen decoration now.

Oh the giant bag of rice is a classic trap. My pantry is basically a museum of good intentions gone stale. You win on paper but lose to real life every time.

Wait, what about storing it right? I keep my big bag of rice in a five gallon bucket with a tight lid. It stays totally fresh for over a year. For me, the math still works out way cheaper per pound. Maybe the trick is better storage, not buying less.
