TIL you can use leftover veggie scraps to make cheap broth

Last month I started saving all my carrot peels, onion ends, and celery tops in a freezer bag instead of tossing them. After a few weeks I had enough to boil with some salt and peppercorns for a solid broth. Ended up with about 3 quarts of soup base for basically zero extra cost. Has anyone else tried this and found good veggie combos to avoid bitter flavors?

Tried this after my friend insisted it works and her broth was super bitter, oops.

super bitter" is a perfect way to put it. You gotta toss that "burnt" garlic, it's what ruins the whole thing. Just a tiny sizzle is all you need, not a full on fry.

That Alton Brown method makes total sense. I saw him explain it on Good Eats once, garlic only needs like 30 seconds max.
