TIL homemade yogurt is way cheaper but is it worth the hassle?

I've been making my own yogurt for a few weeks now, and I'm shook by all the cash I'm saving. On one hand, a gallon of milk makes like 3 quarts of yogurt for less than $5, while store-bought can be $1 per cup. But on the other hand, it takes hours to ferment and you need to keep an eye on the temperature. Some folks say the convenience of just grabbing a tub is worth the extra coins, especially if you catch sales. I'm torn because I love the custom flavors I can make, but dude, the cleanup is a pain. What do y'all think? Is DIY yogurt the move for saving dough, or should I stick to the store?

Man, I tried the whole yogurt thing once and my kitchen looked like a science lab exploded. The waiting drove me nuts, I kept checking it every ten minutes like it was gonna text me back. Saved a ton of money for that one batch but then I got lazy and my starter culture is probably a new form of mold in the back of the fridge now.

My first yogurt batch last year... I used a whole gallon of milk and it turned into this weird lumpy soup. I kept it wrapped in towels for like 12 hours, checking every hour like a crazy person. The smell when I finally opened the pot was something between feet and old cheese... That starter jar is still in my fridge, but I'm too scared to open it now.

Oh man, that "weird lumpy soup" stage is so real! I used to be totally convinced you needed fancy gear and perfect timing. My first few tries were total fails, just like yours. What changed for me was realizing the milk temp doesn't have to be exact, just warm, not hot. Now I just leave it alone overnight in the oven with the light on. No more checking every hour!
