Serious question, my switch to dried chickpeas was a letdown for my wallet

I keep hearing that dried beans are the key to cheap eats. But after buying a bag and accounting for cooking time and energy, my costs were similar to canned. My electric bill spiked from the long simmering. I'm starting to think canned might be the better deal for busy weeks. What am I missing here?

How exactly are you cooking these chickpeas? Stovetop simmering for hours on high will definitely spike your electric use. Have you tried a pressure cooker or even a slow cooker on low? Batch cooking a huge amount and freezing portions could spread that energy cost out. What is your local cost per kilowatt-hour? That number makes a big difference in the real comparison.

Forgot to soak my beans once, ended up with crunchy chili.

Crunchy chili sounds like a texture crime but is it really an energy crisis? My old stove could simmer a pot for half a day and the bill bump was maybe a few bucks. People act like leaving a burner on low is the same as running a space heater all winter.
