Saw my mom's old bean recipe cost about 40 cents a meal
I dug out my grandmother's handwritten cookbook last weekend and made her navy bean soup from the 1970s. One bag of dried beans, a ham hock, and some celery and carrots. Whole pot cost maybe $4 and fed me for a week. Has anyone else gone back to cooking like it's the 70s and found it actually tastes better?

Ha! @abbyk10 my grandma's beans tasted better because she'd threaten us with no dessert if we didn't finish our bowl.

...and I think there's something to that, abbyk10, but it's more about technique than sentiment. When I tried recreating my mom's chili recipe I realized she used a whole dried chili that she'd toast and grind herself. The flavor was way deeper than any powder from a can. Processed foods have gotten faster but they've lost a lot of that layered taste. The beans especially benefit from a long slow simmer that softens them without turning them to mush. Store bought canned beans just don't get that same texture no matter how you season them.
