Pro tip: A deli worker showed me how to stretch $5 into meals for 4 days

Guy at the local market in Austin told me to buy the marked-down produce bags at 7 PM instead of the fresh stuff. I got a bag of banged-up tomatoes for $1.50 and turned them into sauce, soup, and salsa. Anyone else have luck hitting up the clearance section at a specific time?

Funny how the bruised stuff cooks up better than the pretty produce half the time. I'll have to try that 7 PM trick, been paying full price for sad tomatoes.

Man I used to be the same way, always grabbing the perfect looking stuff off the shelf. But a buddy of mine who works at a grocery store told me they mark down the banged up produce right around closing time and it's usually the same quality, just ugly. Now I'm a total convert, I'll take a bruised apple or a dented pepper any day. The ugly ones have way more flavor half the time, like they're trying harder. You can't beat getting a bag of decent tomatoes for a buck fifty just because they got a little beat up in the truck.
