My neighbor's garden changed how I shop for groceries

Three years ago, I lived in a small apartment complex in Fresno. My neighbor, an older lady named Rosa, had a tiny tomato plant in a pot. She gave me a few tomatoes and said, 'This is free flavor.' I started growing basil and mint on my own windowsill. Now I buy less fresh herbs and just snip what I need. What's the easiest thing you've grown to cut your food costs?

Rosa had the right idea about free flavor. Green onions are my go-to, just stick the roots in a glass of water. It's amazing how much you can save by not buying a new bunch every week.

Honestly I tried that and it never works for me. They just get all slimy and weak after a few days. I'd rather just buy a fresh bunch when I need it.

Three days in water and they get that weird clear slime on the bottom, drives me nuts. But honestly that's just how most stuff is these days - everything's designed to be replaced instead of fixed or kept going.
