I had to choose between fresh herbs or a jar of sauce for a pasta dish last night

I was making a simple pasta with what I had, and my choice came down to buying a small bunch of fresh basil for $3.50 or a jar of marinara for $2.75. I went with the jar because it was cheaper and I could use it for more than one meal. To make it better, I slowly cooked a chopped onion and two cloves of garlic I already had in oil until they were soft, then added the jarred sauce. Letting it simmer for about 20 minutes on low heat really helped the flavors come together. The dish turned out great and felt more homemade than just plain sauce from the jar. It fed my family of three with enough left for my lunch today. Has anyone else found a good way to dress up a basic jarred sauce without spending much more?

Found myself in the same spot last week... ended up adding a spoonful of leftover pickle juice to the sauce on a whim and it was surprisingly good.

I read that adding a splash of red wine vinegar can really brighten up a jarred sauce.

Ever think that was just a weird trick?
