Am I the only one who thinks dried beans beat canned even when you count the time?
Everyone says canned beans are the budget move but a 2 pound bag of dried pinto beans for $2.79 makes like 12 cups cooked, versus $1.25 a can for 1.5 cups. I switched 4 months ago and now I soak them Sunday while I grade papers, and yeah its a little work but the math is not even close. Anyone got a trick for making them actually taste like something without dropping $6 on bacon?
Right, because nothing says "I saved money" like spending your whole Sunday babysitting a pot of beans... I do the same thing though, so I can't even clown you for it. My trick is a spoon of cumin and a bay leaf while they cook, plus throw in a dried chile or two. Also salt them at the end, not the start, or they stay tough and you sit there chewing like a cow. And save that bean water, it's basically free flavor for soup later. Six dollar bacon, come on, half an onion and some garlic does the job fine.
