That razor sharpening advice from my old coworker was dead wrong
Back in February, I had this guy Jimmy who worked the chair next to me for like 6 months. He kept telling me I was wasting time with my straight razor maintenance. Said I should just strop it dry, no paste, no nothing, and it would stay sharp forever because the steel was 'good enough'. So I tried his way for about three weeks. First few shaves were okay, but by week two it was pulling like crazy. I had a client with super sensitive skin and she ended up with razor burn so bad she almost left a bad review. I went back to my old routine with the balsa wood and the chromium oxide paste, $12 a jar, and it fixed the edge in one session. I guess my question is, has anyone else had a coworker give them confident but totally backwards advice that bit them in the butt? How do you handle it without making it weird at the shop?
...and that reminds me of this barber I knew back in Ohio who swore up and down that you should sharpen clippers by running them against a coffee mug. He was dead serious too, showed me this whole technique like he invented it. I tried it on my old pair just to see and yeah, it wrecked the blades worse than if I'd dropped them in a puddle. The worst part was he kept insisting I was doing it wrong when I told him it didn't work. Some dudes just build their whole identity around one weird trick and they can't let it go. I just nod now and say "interesting" and then do my own thing after they walk away.
