My old mentor told me to never use a guard over a 2 for a skin fade blend, and I finally see why.

He said it creates a visible 'shelf' that's tough to erase, and to blend with the open lever on a 1.5 instead. Tried it on a client yesterday and the transition was way smoother. Anyone else have a specific guard rule they swear by?

So your old mentor was actually right?

Yeah, and it's wild how right he was, miles54. He kept saying the simplest fix is usually the one you fight against. Like when we spent weeks on a complex database patch, and the real issue was a single typo in a config file. Hated hearing "check the basics first," but now I say it to my own team. He saw the forest when I was stuck counting weird-looking trees.

Oh, the old guys are always right, even when you want them to be wrong. It's a law of nature. You fight their advice just out of pure spite, then years later you're doing the exact thing they said while grumbling about it. That guard rule is the same deal. You think you know a shortcut until you create twice the work fixing your own mess.
