A truck driver waiting on a cut gave me a whole new way to handle cowlicks

So this dude rolls in for a skin fade last Tuesday, right, and he's got this crazy stubborn cowlick right at the crown. I've been fighting those things for years, usually just dry it down and pray. He watches me struggle for a minute and goes, "you're fighting it, not working with it. Cut with the grain, not against it." That hit me way harder than it should have, maybe because I've spent so long trying to force hair into shape instead of following where it naturally sits. I tried his idea on the next three clients with cowlicks, angling my clipper work to match the swirl direction, and the results looked way cleaner even before any product. It's such a simple thing but it flipped how I approach every crown area now. Any other barbers got tricks they picked up from random clients that ended up sticking around longer than what they learned in school?

I'm a painting contractor, so my version of a cowlick is when the drywall tape bubbles up no matter how careful I am. One day an old carpenter on site told me to stop pressing so hard and just let the mud glide with the seam, and honestly it changed my whole life. I used to slap on three coats and pray, now I do one good pass and it sits flat. Guess us tradesmen all got the same curse, we think force fixes everything until some random guy humbles us with a simple line.
