A client told me my fades looked "sloppy on top" - changed how I prep hair entirely

I've been cutting hair for about 3 years now. Last month a regular named Marcus told me my fades were fine but the transition near the crown looked choppy. He said "you're not softening the hair enough before you start clippering." I always just sprayed water and went for it. Now I spend a full 2 minutes towel drying and combing the hair into place first. It adds time but my blends come out way smoother. Anyone else change their prep routine after a single comment from a client?

and honestly that's the kind of criticism that sticks with you because it's true. i used to just spray and go too but now i actually section the top and dry it with a comb first (takes maybe 90 seconds extra). it's wild how much smoother the blend gets when the hair's not matted down wet. Marcus did you a favor honestly.

Ain't it funny how one honest comment can totally flip your whole process? Marcus did you a solid, man. Most people just nod and say it's fine, but the ones who actually speak up are the ones that help you get better. I notice that everywhere now. Like, the best advice I ever got about cooking my steak came from a guy at a barbecue who just straight up told me I was overcooking it. Nobody else said a word for years. We get stuck in our own ruts and don't even see the obvious stuff until someone points it out. Those little reality checks from other people are gold, even if they sting a little at first.
