TIL the bakery supply spot on 5th in Portland bags day old loaves for $2 each
I stopped by a small bakery supply shop on 5th in Portland on a Tuesday morning to grab some rye flour. While I was waiting at the counter, I saw an employee stacking clear bags of yesterday's sourdough and sandwich loaves in a basket by the door with a little handwritten sign. I asked about it and she told me the shop bags up whatever didn't sell and sells it cheap so it doesn't get tossed. I grabbed two loaves for $4 and they were still soft enough for toast, plus the stale ones made great croutons. Does anyone know if other supply shops around town do this too, or is this just a lucky find?
