My stand mixer started smoking mid-knead last Sunday

I was making a double batch of sourdough and about 8 minutes into the second mix, the motor started smelling like burnt rubber. Had to haul out the hand mixer and finish by hand. Anybody else have a KitchenAid that just gave up on them at the worst time?

Oh man, did the smoke smell like burnt electronics or more like a hot mechanic smell? I had my KitchenAid do the exact same thing last year on a batch of bagels. You might want to check the grease in the tilt-head mechanism. Mine had completely dried up and turned into a sticky paste, which made the motor work way too hard. I opened it up, scraped out the old stuff, and put in new food-safe grease. It's been running smooth ever since. Also, double batches are tough on those smaller models, so I usually stop and let it rest for a minute between mixes now.

@taylor.phoenix that burnt electronics smell is EXACTLY what I got when my old hand mixer seized up mid-batch of peanut butter cookies, had to finish mixing with a wooden spoon like a caveman.
