My kid's teacher said my gingerbread house looked 'like a real home' at the school fair
She told me it was the 'warm feeling' from the extra cinnamon in the royal icing that did it, which honestly I just threw in on a whim. Has anyone else had a tiny spice change get that kind of reaction?

Read a food blog once that said our sense of smell is tied directly to memory, so a little extra spice can totally make something feel familiar and cozy. Your story about the cinnamon icing is a perfect example of that! It's amazing how such a small choice can create a whole feeling for someone. Makes me want to go add a pinch of cardamom to my next batch of sugar cookies just to see what happens.

That memory thing is so true, I once added nutmeg to my apple pie and my friend said it tasted just like her childhood.

My wife still teases me about the time I added a half teaspoon of smoked paprika to our chili instead of sweet. It tasted like a campfire, but my brother-in-law said it reminded him of his grandpa's cabin. That memory thing @norag55 mentioned is wild. I guess my happy accident just hit different for him.
