My aunt's sourdough starter advice was totally backwards

My aunt told me to keep my starter in the fridge and feed it once a week. After 2 months of flat, dense loaves I finally looked it up and realized room temp feeding every 12 hours is the way to go. She's been baking for 30 years too so I just trusted her... big mistake. Has anyone else gotten bad advice from a family member that set them back weeks?

Just picture me nodding along for 2 months while my aunt swore her fridge starter method was "the real deal" and I ended up with bricks I could have used as doorstops. Now I'm feeding this thing every 12 hours like it's a newborn and I've got bubbles for days. Yeah, 30 years of experience just means she's been doing it wrong longer than I've been alive. I guess her sourdough "success" was just really well timed bricks for the neighborhood birds.

30 years of sourdough means she probably just has a different method that works for her setup.
