Dropped $95 on a sourdough starter kit and the jar cracked on day 3
I bought one of those complete starter kits from a small shop in Ann Arbor last month. The jar that came with it was thin glass and it cracked when I poured warm water in, so I lost the whole starter and the little thermometer too. I called the shop and they told me that jar was meant for storage only, not mixing, which was not written anywhere on the box. Save your money and just use a wide mouth mason jar plus a kitchen scale. Has anyone found a starter kit that is actually worth buying, or should I just stick with the free method?
Yeah those kits are mostly just a pretty jar and a tiny bag of flour for 5x the price. Wide mouth mason jar and a cheap digital scale is all you need, plus maybe a rubber band to mark the rise. Been doing it that way for years and never lost a batch to glass cracking.
