Can we talk about choosing between a hand mixer and a stand mixer for buttercream?
I had to pick one or the other last week when my old hand mixer finally died in the middle of a batch of Swiss buttercream for a friend's birthday cake here in Boise. I went with a $40 hand mixer from Target instead of saving up for a stand mixer, and honestly my arm was sore by the end but the buttercream came out smooth with zero gritty bits. For those of you who bake a lot, did you ever regret going cheap on a hand mixer, or is a stand mixer really worth the wait?
The part about your arm being sore by the end is exactly why people save up for the stand mixer, but here's where I see it differently. Sore arm for one batch beats waiting months to bake anything, and a $40 mixer that gets the job done is not "going cheap," it's being smart with what you have right now. Swiss buttercream is actually one of the easier ones to mess up with heat, and if yours came out smooth with no grit, that tells me your method was solid, not the tool. A stand mixer mostly buys you time and freedom for big batches, like double or triple recipes, but for a single cake it's honestly overkill. Your mileage may vary, but I would rather have a cheap mixer and be baking today than save up and be baking in six months.
