Vent: my parts guy in Dayton showed me how to read a Ford build tag and I wasted 2 hours before that
I spent two hours hunting down the wrong brake pads on a 2016 F-150 last week because I trusted the parts store computer over the door tag. My guy Larry at the counter in Dayton walked me out to the truck and pointed at the sticker on the driver door jamb, then showed me how to break down the axle code and spring code right there. Turns out the truck had the heavy duty payload package and the computer kept pulling the standard pads. He said he sees this mistake about three times a week and it always costs somebody half a shift. I wrote the codes on a sticky note and taped it inside my box so I stop guessing. Anybody else got a quick decode method for the build tag codes, or do you just call the dealer with the VIN every time?

Door jamb tag is good for axle and spring codes but it won't tell you the whole brake story by itself. You still want the VIN when there are mid year changes, since Ford swaps pad shapes based on build date and plant, not just the payload package. Sticky note in the box is smart though, that beats calling the dealer every time.
