Pro tip: I finally stopped using the old 'hand tight plus a quarter turn' rule for oil filters

Saw a guy at the shop in Dayton strip the threads on a customer's 2.4L Ecotec last month. He used that old rule and cranked it way too far. The spec is actually just hand tight until the gasket touches, then another three quarters of a turn max. I keep a Sharpie mark on the filter now to be sure. How do you guys make sure you don't overdo it?

Sharpie trick is genius. I just count rotations out loud like a weirdo.

Nah, counting out loud is gonna mess with your rhythm. The sharpie thing works if you're just making a mark but it hides the real problem which is that you're not tracking the rotation speed by feel. Once you develop muscle memory you should be able to sense when it's done without any trick. The counting is way too distracting and takes your focus off the actual movement.

Nah, I get what @the_felix is saying about counting, but honestly I think people blow this whole oil filter thing way out of proportion. I've been changing my own oil for like 15 years across different cars and never had a leak or stripped thread. The "hand tight plus a quarter turn" rule worked fine for me until everyone started overthinking it. Most guys I know just snug it up by feel and move on. Unless you're cranking it like you're trying to tighten a lug nut, it's really not that serious. The Ecotec guy probably just had a bad day or used a tool that gave him too much leverage.
