My old floor jack started to leak oil all over the bay last Tuesday
It was a 3-ton model I've had for about eight years. I was lifting a pickup truck when I saw a small puddle under the saddle. By the time I got the truck on stands, it was a steady drip. I checked the seals and one was clearly worn out. I ordered a rebuild kit online for $45, but I'm using a shop jack until it comes in. What's the longest you've kept a floor jack running with just basic maintenance?

You mentioned getting a rebuild kit. Honestly, I don't mess with that. Once a jack starts leaking, it's a safety thing for me. I had a seal let go on a 90s Craftsman. Rebuilt it, but it never felt right. Ended up just buying a new one. A leak under load is how you get hurt.

1800 pounds of car on a jack stand that's been "rebuilt" is a bet I just won't take. I'd rather put that money into a new jack and sleep easy than worry about a corner I used to fix.

It's funny how we fix stuff until it feels like a risk. My dad's jack from the 80s finally gave up after he patched it three times. Maybe some things just have a natural end point.
