My dad's trick for spotting a bad bearing without taking anything apart

Had a whining sound that had me stuck, so I remembered my dad's way with a long screwdriver to listen on parts. Put it on the alternator and the grind was obvious. Makes you miss when fixes were that simple, doesn't it?

Wait, you can actually hear it that clearly? I mean I always thought that was more of a general noise check, not like you could pick out a single bad bearing just from a screwdriver.

Grab a mechanic's stethoscope next time... the metal rod lets you hear bearings clear even in loud spaces. I check condenser fan motors with it by touching the tip to the housing, and the grind stands out from the ambient hum. That little tool has saved me from replacing good parts more than once.

That screwdriver trick is such a smart way to find bearing noise without tearing things apart. I read somewhere that the metal transmits sound vibrations directly to your ear, making flaws obvious. @river_gonzalez66 has a point about the stethoscope being even better for loud areas (since it blocks out background noise, you know). Honestly, both methods rely on the same basic idea of listening through solid contact. It's kind of amazing how simple tools can save so much time and guesswork. Makes you appreciate the old-school fixes that still hold up today.
