I'll take a clutch job on a '90s Honda over a new Subaru any day

Had to drop the trans on a 2023 Outback last week to fix a rear main seal. Took me almost 11 hours with all the computer modules and wiring in the way. Last month I did a clutch on a 1995 Civic in my driveway in 3 hours with hand tools. People say new cars are easier to work on but I just don't see it. Has anyone else had a nightmare job on a newer vehicle that should've been simple?

That 11 hours vs 3 hours comparison is brutal. Did you find yourself fighting with the electronics more than the actual mechanical work, or was it just a nightmare of removing parts to get to the seal? It sounds like the engineers made zero effort to plan for basic maintenance access on that Outback.

Is that about right for Subarus though, or was this one especially bad? @grantl94's picture of all those plastic pieces spread out on the floor told me everything I needed to know about their design philosophy.

Started tearing into that thing and realized I spent the first 45 minutes just trying to find where the blinker fluid reservoir was supposed to be lol. Electronics weren't the worst of it honestly, the real fight was removing like 8 different plastic covers just to see the seal. Engineers definitely designed that car for robots with tiny hands lmao.
