I was dead wrong about those IR thermometer guns for checking bearing temps

Always thought they were just a gimmick for HVAC guys until my shop foreman showed me a wheel hub that was 30 degrees hotter than the others on a test drive and saved us a comeback, has anyone else had one of those tools actually prove itself when you least expected it?

Easy to miss a failing bearing without one.

Bring it up during test rides more often than I should. People will swear they can hear everything from the saddle but road noise and wind drown out subtle sounds. I've found that the real value shows when you're trying to trace a vibration that's only there at certain RPMs or speeds. Without it you're just guessing which wheel or bearing is going bad. Saves a ton of headache when you can pinpoint it to the front or rear in five minutes.
