I called those fancy scan tools a waste of money for years
I ran a small shop for a decade and thought my basic code reader was enough. Then a 2018 Ford F-150 came in with a weird transmission shudder and no codes. A buddy let me borrow his high-end scanner, and it showed a live data PID for torque converter slip that my cheap tool couldn't see. We swapped the converter and the problem was fixed in a day. That one job paid for half the tool. How many of you actually use the advanced features on your scanners, or is it still just for clearing check engine lights?

Totally! My cheap scanner missed a bad O2 sensor once.

But what if the cheap scanner just saved you from a more expensive repair, @abbyk10? Sometimes a simple code clear is all you need.
