My cat figured out how to open the refrigerator door last Tuesday

I was in the kitchen making coffee around 7 AM when I heard this weird creaking noise. Turned around and saw my orange tabby Mango hanging from the fridge handle with both paws, using his full body weight to pull it open. He dropped down, stuck his head inside, and started sniffing at the cheese drawer like he owned the place. I stood there with my coffee mug half full just staring at him. He actually managed to grab a string cheese wrapper in his teeth and drag it out before I could shut the door. Now I have to use a child safety lock on my fridge because of a 12 pound cat. Has anyone else dealt with a pet that broke into the refrigerator?

... hang on, you're really gonna put a child lock on your fridge because of one incident with a string cheese? I mean yeah it's funny and all but it's not like the cat is gonna start making sandwiches in there. He grabbed some cheese, big deal. My dog has done way worse stuff and I didn't go buying locks for every cabinet in the house. Just seems like overkill for a thing that probably won't happen again unless you leave it wide open for him. Cats are smart but they're not exactly planning heists.

Gotta admit I used to be one of those people rolling their eyes at stories like this. Thought cat owners were being dramatic. Then my own cat figured out how to open the fridge door by jumping on the handle. He didn't just grab one thing, he pulled out an entire block of cheese and left it shredded on the floor. After that I put a child lock on and I haven't regretted it. It's not about planning heists, it's about them learning one trick that works. Once they figure out the fridge opens, they'll keep trying it. Better safe than cleaning up a mess of melted butter and spilled milk at 3 in the morning.
