Was sure variegated yarn was overrated until I saw it in a pattern

I used to think those multi-color skeins were a gimmick that looked messy in everything. Then my buddy Sarah finished a striped beanie using Malabrigo Caracol and it actually looked intentional and clean. Tried it myself on a scarf for my sister in Chicago and now I get the hype. Anyone else come around on something they swore they'd never use?

it actually looked intentional and clean" - that's the thing that made me change my mind too. My buddy Dave bought a skein of some hand-dyed rainbow wool on a whim and made a pair of socks. He's not exactly a meticulous knitter, guy usually rushes through projects, but those socks came out looking like he spent weeks planning the color placement. I had to laugh because he didn't even know what he was doing, just let the yarn do its thing. Now he's got like four more skeins in different colorways sitting in his stash, waiting for the next "accidental masterpiece.

My first time trying self-striping yarn was with a skein of sock blanks from a local dyer, and I was nervous I'd mess it up. I just cast on and let the colors pool however they wanted, ended up with a hat that looks like I planned every stripe for hours. Sometimes the best move is to get out of your own way and trust the yarn to do the heavy lifting.
