I've been twisting my yarn the wrong direction for 2 years and didn't know

So I'm working on this chevron blanket for my niece, and I kept noticing these weird little bumps in the stitches. I thought it was just my tension being off, which happens. Then my aunt from out of town stopped by last Wednesday, looked at my work for like 5 seconds, and goes 'you're wrapping your yarn the opposite way for purl stitches'. She pulled out her phone and showed me a slow motion video of the difference. I've been doing combined continental style completely by accident. Has anyone else had a 'lightbulb moment' with a basic technique that you thought you had down?

Yeah, that "you're wrapping the yarn the wrong way for purl stitches" hit me HARD. I actually saw something similar in a Reddit thread a few weeks ago where someone said they'd been doing Eastern mounted purls for years without realizing it. The bumps you mentioned made me think of that. I tried switching my purl wrap after reading about it and my ribbing stopped looking like a mess. It's CRAZY how one tiny hand motion changes the whole fabric.

Hold on though, is it really "wrong" or just different? Eastern mount purls actually produce a different fabric that some people prefer for certain patterns, like texture work. Maybe you stumbled onto something that works better for you and your aunt just didn't get it.
