My neighbor told me to use wd-40 on my stuck lug nuts, now I'm waiting for new studs
So last week I had a flat tire on my 2005 Civic and couldn't get the lug nuts off. My neighbor Bob comes over and says just spray some WD-40 on them, it'll loosen right up. I sprayed a solid 10 seconds on each nut, let it sit for 5 minutes, and they came off easy. But here's the thing - WD-40 isn't a penetrant like PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench. Two of the studs snapped off when I torqued them back on later. Had to drop $60 on new studs and spent 3 hours replacing them with a hammer and socket. Anyone else had WD-40 betray them like this?

wd40 is a solvent, not a lube or penetrant. thats on you for torquing them back down without checking if the studs were already stressed. ive never snapped a stud using wd40 and ive used it on rusty hardware plenty. maybe your studs were already on their way out.

yeah that's a fair point, I've seen plenty of guys snap stuff that was already cracked and just didn't know it. sorry you had to deal with that mess though.
