Paid $150 for a 'certified' mechanic inspection before buying a used truck. Found out later the frame was completely rotted.

You know what? This EXACT thing happened to my buddy Mike last year. He paid some guy $200 to check out a 2012 F-150 and the guy said "frame looks great, just surface rust." Two months later he went to put a hitch on and the whole back half of the frame crumbled like a saltine cracker. Total loss, truck went straight to the scrap yard.

Mike's mechanic probably just gave him a lazy once-over without actually poking the frame with a screwdriver. Ive seen plenty of trucks from that era that still have solid frames if they were washed regularly during the winter months. The real issue is that $200 inspection is barely enough for a decent look let alone a proper frame assessment.
