Can we talk about bringing your teen to the job site?

Last week, I took my 16-year-old son out on a drilling job for the first time. He was curious but kept asking questions that showed how little he knew about the basics. It made me think about how we pass down this trade to our kids. How do you all handle family members who want to learn the ropes? I'd love to hear your stories or tips.

My first day I didn't even know which end of the hammer to hold, so your kid's ahead of me.

Hold up, this sounds like a major safety headache waiting to happen. Job sites are full of dangerous stuff a curious kid just doesn't have the experience to handle, even if you're watching them. Letting them learn there feels like asking for trouble, like with heavy machinery or live wires. They could get hurt or pick up bad habits before they even know the real rules. There's gotta be a safer way to get them interested.

Live wires are a real hazard, but @gavinmurray, I'm shocked you think curiosity always leads to trouble. With the right guidance, kids can learn to respect tools and dangers early on (my nephew knew drill safety at seven). Keeping them completely away might make the job site seem more mysterious and tempting later. Controlled exposure with clear rules is key, not total avoidance.
