Finally got my desk lamp to auto-dim based on how much sunlight is coming through my window

I rigged up a cheap light sensor from an old phone charger to a dimmer switch, and after three tries with the wiring backwards, it actually worked and my eyes don't hurt at 3pm anymore - has anyone else hacked their desk setup with random parts like this?

Almost burned my apartment down trying to wire up a thermistor to a fan once. Still haven't figured out where the smoke came from but the fan works great now so I'm calling it a win.
