Just realized I was cleaning my records wrong for years

A guy at a record swap in Austin told me to stop using my Spin Clean and just go with distilled water and a microfiber cloth. I thought he was crazy until I tried it on a noisy copy of Rumours - all that surface noise I blamed on the pressing just vanished. Anyone else ditch their fancy cleaning rig for the simple stuff?

Oh man, that's wild - did you actually test the Spin Clean against the distilled water method side by side or just take the guy's word for it? I've been using enzymatic cleaner on my crusty thrift store jazz records and it's been working decent, but now I'm wondering if I'm overcomplicating things too. Were there any records where the simple method just didnt cut it, like with really deep dirt or mold?

Man, I just dipped a few records in a bucket of distilled water and called it a day. The Spin Clean did catch some crud a regular rinse missed, but once mold gets in the grooves you're pretty much hosed either way.
