Watched a tape get eaten by my player and froze up

I was at a Goodwill in Phoenix last Saturday and grabbed a copy of The Thing on VHS for $2. Got home, popped it in, and about 20 minutes in the tape got chewed up and half the ribbon is now wadded inside the cassette shell. Anyone know a safe way to untangle a spool without ruining the magnetic coating?

$2? Man, inflation really did a number on me because I remember when these tapes were practically given away at garage sales for a quarter. Still though, that's not the point. Finding something this obscure for pocket change and then seeing what people paid for it later is wild. You could take that $2 and trade it up into something way more valuable if you found the right person. It's like finding a gold coin in a pile of pennies, you don't just shrug it off.
