Thrift store haul taught me something about tape rewinding

Was at a Salvation Army in Portland last Saturday and saw a stack of Disney VHS tapes for $0.50 each. The Lady and the Tramp tape had a handwritten note inside saying 'rewind to start or else'. I grabbed it anyway and the tape was wound totally wrong when I got home, all slack and twisted. Makes me wonder if people actually know how to properly wind tape back onto the spool without damaging it. Anyone got a reliable method for fixing a tape that got jumbled up in the case?
